Toxicodendron vernicifluum, also known as Chinese lacquer tree, varnish tree, or Japanese lacquer tree, is a deciduous tree that can grow up to 20 meters tall. The bark is grayish-white, rough, and irregularly fissured vertically. The twigs are stout and covered with brownish soft hairs. The odd-pinnate compound leaves are spirally arranged, alternate, 22-75 cm long, with leaflets in 4-6 pairs. The leaflets are ovate, elliptic, or lanceolate, 6-13 cm long, 3-6 cm wide, with an acuminate or acute apex, oblique base, and entire margin. The leaflets are glabrous on the upper surface or with fine hairs along the midrib, and initially hairy on the lower surface, becoming densely covered with light brown soft hairs along the veins when mature. The tree produces cone-shaped inflorescences that are 15-30 cm long, covered with grayish-yellow soft hairs. The flowers are either monoecious or dioecious, with yellow-green petals. The male flowers have 5 ovate sepals, 5 oblong petals that reflex outward, and 5 stamens with linear filaments and oblong anthers. The female flowers are smaller than the male flowers, with a globose ovary, 1 locule, and 3 styles. The fruit clusters hang down slightly and contain kidney-shaped or elliptical drupes that are 5-6 mm long and 7-8 mm wide. The outer skin of the fruit is yellow, smooth, and glossy, not splitting when ripe. The middle layer of the fruit skin is waxy with resinous stripes, and the brown seed is similar in shape to the fruit, about 3 mm long and 5 mm wide, hard and woody.The flowering period is from May to June, and the fruiting period is from July to October.
